Dermal fillers are an excellent option for patients who want to reduce signs of aging such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines or hollowness in the cheek area. They can also be used to non-surgically augment the lips for a fuller or more symmetrical appearance. Juvéderm products are a popular option for these purposes. Patients from Oregon and Washington can turn to Silver Falls Dermatology for safe Juvéderm injections with natural-looking results.

What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is a dermal filler with a hyaluronic acid-based formula. Juvéderm is a smooth gel which is injected into the skin to restore volume and fill in fine lines and wrinkles. The Juvéderm brand includes several products designed for different areas of the face with varying concentrations of hyaluronic acid and differing bonding structures. The Juvéderm family of products includes:

  • Juvéderm Voluma XC, used primarily in the cheeks
  • Juvéderm XC and Juvéderm Vollure XC, used primarily for wrinkles and volume loss issues near the mouth and nose
  • Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Volbella XC, used primarily for the lips

How Does Juvéderm Work?

Juvéderm works by adding volume to the area where it is injected. The products contain various amounts or formulas of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance which bonds with water, producing a hydrated, full and youthful appearance in the skin. Most wrinkles in the mid to lower sections of the face—the cheeks, nose or mouth areas—are caused by volume loss over time. Juvéderm can be injected into these areas to restore lost volume and essentially fill in wrinkles and fine lines for a naturally firm and youthful look. The product’s consistency is a smooth and flexible gel, allowing for natural movement and appearance. Over time, the body will naturally and safely metabolize the hyaluronic acid within Juvéderm, meaning that results are not permanent.

Who is a Good Candidate for Juvéderm?

Most patients who have concerns about signs of aging (volume loss, fine lines or wrinkles) or wish to non-surgically augment the lips are good candidate for Juvéderm. In some cases, your provider may recommend an alternative dermal filler option, such as Restylane, RHA Collection or Radiesse, to better suit your goal results. Those with additional aging concerns, such as discoloration or dynamic wrinkles, may be encouraged to pair Juvéderm injections with other treatments such as Botox or laser resurfacing. Some patients with certain skin conditions may not be good candidates for Juvéderm, so it is important to share your health history during the consultation. Juvéderm is not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What to Expect During Juvéderm Injections

Prior to your Juvéderm appointment, you should avoid taking blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory medications and supplements such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Juvéderm injections can typically be performed directly after your consultation during the same appointment. After determining that you are a good candidate for Juvéderm and selecting the best formula for your needs, your provider will mark the injection sites and determine the appropriate amount of product to achieve your goal results. The Juvéderm can then be injected using a small needle. Numbing or anesthesia is not generally necessary to perform Juvéderm injections, as the product contains lidocaine to minimize discomfort. After making the injections, your provider will lightly massage the area to evenly distribute the product and reduce swelling. Appointments for Juvéderm injections can be completed in as little as 15 minutes depending on the treatment area.

After Juvéderm Injections

After your Juvéderm injections, you can expect some side effects including redness, minimal swelling and some tenderness in the area. Some patients may also experience bruising, but this can typically be avoided. Your provider will advise you to avoid strenuous activity such as exercise, consuming alcohol, applying makeup or direct sun exposure for at least 24 hours after your injections. This will allow you to prevent side effects like bruising or bleeding.

Juvéderm results are immediately noticeable aside from some minor swelling, which should quickly resolve. The body will naturally and gradually metabolize the product over time, meaning that Juvéderm results are not permanent. On average, patients find that their results last between six months and two years. This varies depending on the treatment area, the Juvéderm formula used, your personal metabolic rate and other factors. After Juvéderm results subside, you can receive maintenance injections.
