What are Recurrent Infections?

Recurrent infections are any type of infection which lasts abnormally long or develops abnormally frequently. Recurrent infections can affect both children and adults and can be caused by a range of underlying issues. Some examples of a recurrent infection may be an illness or condition which requires antibiotic treatment more than twice per year (in adults), pneumonia which occurs two or more times in a particular period, chronic sinusitis, an unusually severe case of a common bacterial infection or illness which requires preventative antibiotics. Some examples of infections or conditions that may fall into these categories would include:

• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
• Cold or flu
• Shingles
• Yeast or fungal infections (vaginal yeast infections, nail fungus etc.)
• Pneumonia

What Causes Recurrent Infections?

Several conditions or lifestyle habits may result in or contribute to recurrent infections. These can range from serious medical issues that require treatment to less severe health concerns that can be addressed through changing your daily habits. Some causes of recurrent infections could include:

• Lack of sleep or poor-quality sleep
• Smoking
• Alcohol misuse or alcoholism
• Poor hygiene habits
• Genetic predisposition
• Structural abnormalities (such as an abnormally shaped urinary tract, resulting in frequent UTIs)
• Overuse of antibiotics
• Diabetes
• Immune disorders or autoimmune disorders 
• Multiple myeloma
