Known by medical professionals as tinea corporis, ringworm is a fungal infection which causes an itchy circular rash. This infection is related to athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) and jock itch (tinea cruris). When it occurs on the scalp, it is also known as tinea capitis.
Ringworm spreads due to direct contact with an infected person or animal. It is also possible for the infection to spread due to contact with a contaminated object or, in rare cases, infected soil. The mold-like parasites which cause ringworm are relatively common, making ringworm a common infection.
After diagnosing ringworm, your provider may recommend either over-the-counter or prescription antifungal medication. Typically, this will be a topical medication such as a cream or ointment that you should apply directly to the affected area. Severe cases of ringworm can be treated using oral medication.
