Over time, it is normal to see volume loss and subsequent lines and wrinkles as collagen and elastin production slows and fat redistribution occurs. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are a non-surgical solution to these common signs of aging, and Restylane is among the most popular options. At Silver Falls Dermatology, patients near our 23 locations across Washington and Oregon can choose from Restylane dermal fillers.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is a type of hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. These products can be used to reduce lines and wrinkles by filling in areas of poor elasticity or restoring lost volume. Several types of Restylane are available with varying formulas suited to different treatment areas or intended uses. The Restylane family of products includes:

  • Restylane
  • Restylane Silk
  • Restylane Lyft
  • Restylane Refyne
  • Restylane Defyne
  • Restylane Kysse
  • Restylane Contour

Uses for Restylane

Most Restylane products are used to treat age-related volume loss and wrinkles in the mid to lower parts of the face. This includes:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Perioral lines (smoker’s lines or lipstick lines)
  • Marionette lines
  • Hollow or sunken cheeks
  • Tear troughs (dark circles below the eyes)

In addition to these common aging concerns, Restylane may be used to non-surgically augment the lips. Products including Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse are commonly used to create fuller or more symmetrical lips.

Candidates for Restylane

A majority of patients who are concerned about age-related volume loss or fine lines and wrinkles are good candidates for Restylane. Restylane is approved for patients 18 years old or older. It is not recommended for patients who have severe allergies or history of scarring or skin pigmentation disorders. Before Restylane injections, you should also avoid taking any anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications or supplements including aspirin.

The Restylane Injection Procedure

Most Restylane injections take place immediately after your consultation. Injections do not typically require a topical numbing agent, as most formulas of Restylane contain lidocaine. Injections are completed quickly in your provider’s office, with most procedures taking no more than 30 minutes to complete.

After your Restylane injections, there is no downtime required. Your provider will instruct you to avoid strenuous activity and exercise, consuming alcohol or direct sun exposure for at least 24 hours after your injections. This reduces risk of unnecessary bruising or bleeding.

Restylane Results

Restylane results can be seen immediately, though some swelling will be present and can last about 48 hours. Other common side effects include redness or tenderness at the injection site. Restylane results are not permanent, as the body will naturally metabolize the product. The duration of your Restylane results will vary depending on the specific product and treatment area. On average, Restylane lasts between six and 18 months. You can choose to receive periodic maintenance injections to keep up results over time.
