Scabies is a highly contagious infection caused by small mites. This condition can spread quickly among family members and should be addressed by a professional. If you notice signs of scabies, schedule an appointment at a Silver Falls Dermatology location in Oregon or Washington.

What is Scabies?

Scabies is a condition caused by small burrowing mites known as Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies infections result in intense itching, which is often worse at night, and small blisters or bumps on the skin following thin, irregular tracks. These blisters are most commonly found in folds of the skin.

What Causes Scabies?

Scabies is caused by a microscopic mite which burrows in the skin and deposits eggs. The infection is highly contagious, as the mites may spread to other people through close physical contact. Scabies can also spread by sharing clothing or bedding.

Treatment Options for Scabies

If you are diagnosed with scabies, several treatment options are available. These treatments are focused on eliminating the mites and their eggs. Your provider will prescribe a cream or lotion which should be applied to the entire body to ensure all mites and eggs are eliminated. In most cases, your provider will also instruct all members of your household to use this medication to avoid further infestations. In some cases, oral medication may also be recommended.
