Scabies is a condition caused by small burrowing mites known as Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies infections result in intense itching, which is often worse at night, and small blisters or bumps on the skin following thin, irregular tracks. These blisters are most commonly found in folds of the skin.
Scabies is caused by a microscopic mite which burrows in the skin and deposits eggs. The infection is highly contagious, as the mites may spread to other people through close physical contact. Scabies can also spread by sharing clothing or bedding.
If you are diagnosed with scabies, several treatment options are available. These treatments are focused on eliminating the mites and their eggs. Your provider will prescribe a cream or lotion which should be applied to the entire body to ensure all mites and eggs are eliminated. In most cases, your provider will also instruct all members of your household to use this medication to avoid further infestations. In some cases, oral medication may also be recommended.
