Reticular veins can be the source of self-consciousness for many patients. These veins are rarely dangerous but can be uncomfortable. If you have reticular veins and wish to remove them, you can turn to the expert providers at Silver Falls Dermatology through one of our many Oregon and Washington locations.

What are Reticular Veins?

Reticular veins are a type of visible vein which share some characteristics with spider veins or varicose veins. Reticular veins do not typically cause symptoms, however, many people choose to treat them for cosmetic reasons. These veins are typically blue or purple and most commonly appear on the backs of the knees, inner thighs or ankles. In some rare cases, reticular veins may also cause some pain or discomfort in the lower legs.

What Causes Reticular Veins?

Reticular veins are caused by damage to the valves within the veins. This results in blood leaking backward through the vein or pooling. Some risk factors can increase your chances of developing reticular veins. These include a family history, pregnancy, obesity, aging or occupations which require standing for long periods of time.

Reticular Vein Treatment

Several treatment options are available for reticular veins. Laser therapy or IPL are commonly used to remove the veins. These treatments use rapid pulses of intense light or laser energy to target the pigmented cells within reticular veins. This generates heat, damaging the reticular vein and ultimately removing it. However, as these treatments target pigmentation, they are not suitable for those with tan or dark skin tones. You provider can recommend alternative treatment options, such as sclerotherapy or microphlebectomy, as needed.
