Xeomin

While most people have heard of Botox to treat wrinkles such as glabellar lines or crow’s feet, not all have heard of Xeomin. Xeomin is another neuromodulator option, which uses a similar active ingredient without additives included in its formula. What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is a neuromodulator injectable, meaning that it falls into the same category as Botox and Dysport. The active ingredient in Xeomin is incobotulinumtoxinA, a neurotoxin which temporarily paralyzes the muscles where the product is injected. This makes it useful in treating dynamic wrinkles, or the wrinkles which form when you make facial expressions such as squinting, smiling, scowling or frowning. Some patients may favor Xeomin as an alternative to Botox and Dysport, as patients often see varying results from each product for reasons that are not well understood. Xeomin also contains no additives within its formula, reducing the risk of patients developing adverse reactions to the injections. 

Uses for Xeomin 

Xeomin is primarily used to treat wrinkles between the eyebrows, known as glabellar lines or 11 lines, as well as dynamic wrinkles around the eyes or horizontal forehead lines. 

Candidates for Xeomin 

Most patients who see dynamic wrinkles in the eye or forehead areas are good candidates for Xeomin. It can be a good option for those who are concerned about potential reactions to additives in other neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport. Before receiving Xeomin injections, you should be generally healthy. Those with skin infections or conditions such as eczema or psoriasis may be poor candidates for Xeomin. The treatment is also not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. During a consultation, be sure to share your health history, including any medication or supplements you take, with your provider. 

The Xeomin Injection Procedure 

Prior to receiving Xeomin injections, you should refrain from taking any blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory medications or supplements. These can increase the chance of bleeding or bruising. Your injections can typically take place immediately after your initial consultation. A topical numbing cream may be applied to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, but this is not always necessary. The Xeomin procedure requires, on average, about five injections and can be completed in about 30 minutes at most. 

Xeomin Results 

After your Xeomin injections, it is important to avoid applying pressure to the treatment area, as this can cause the product to migrate outside of the intended muscle groups. You should also avoid strenuous activity such as exercise, drinking alcohol or direct sun exposure for about 24 hours. 

Final Xeomin results can typically be seen about a week after the injections. These results are not permanent. On average, patients can expect their Xeomin results to last about three to six months.
