Common Chronic Skin Conditions

Some skin conditions or diseases are so common that almost all people will experience them at some point in their lifetime. For example, most people will experience acne at least occasionally. When the condition persists long-term or causes significant symptoms, treatment with a dermatology provider may be necessary.

Acne

Acne is the result of blocked hair follicles due to excess oil, dead skin cells or other debris as well as bacterial infection within the pores. There are several types of acne, which can be treated using oral or topical medication, in-office treatments such as HydraFacial or chemical peels, laser therapies or professional-grade skincare products.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease which results in patches of hair loss. Alopecia areata can be treated using corticosteroids, minoxidil or other medications.

Atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is commonly referred to as eczema. This condition causes itchy, dry skin that can become swollen, cracked or scaly. Atopic dermatitis can be treated using prescription or over-the-counter medications and creams, suitable skincare products or phototherapy.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis causes itchiness and, typically, plaques of thick, scaly skin. This is the result of immune system dysfunction causing inflammation and excess skin cell production. Psoriasis treatments include steroid creams, medicated lotions or shampoos, light therapy and more.

Rosacea

Rosacea causes flushed or thickened skin as well as pimples on the face. This condition is typically triggered by temperature fluctuations, spicy food, alcohol or other factors. Some treatment options include topical medications and laser procedures.

Skin cancer

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. There are several types of skin cancer, with the most common being basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Skin cancer is highly treatable when diagnosed early.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo results in pigmentation loss in the skin. This condition does not generally require treatment for medical purposes, but treatments including topicals or lasers can restore even pigmentation.

Rare or Uncommon Chronic Skin Diseases

Most rare chronic skin diseases are caused by genetic factors. Some examples include:

  • Actinic prurigo (AP), in which patients develop an itchy rash after sun exposure
  • Epidermolysis bullosa, a connective tissue disorder that results in skin that blisters or tears easily
  • Harlequin ichthyosis, a disease present at birth which causes thick, hard plates or plaques of skin
  • Necrobiosis lipoidica, a rash on the lower areas of the legs which develops into open sores
