At Silver Falls Dermatology, we offer a range of effective and minimally invasive procedures to help our patients resolve their skin conditions. One option is cryotherapy, which is available at our 23 locations in Oregon and Washington. This procedure can be a suitable solution for warts, skin tags, skin cancer and more.

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a procedure which uses extreme cold temperatures to kill and remove unhealthy or unwanted tissues from the body. In dermatology, this typically consists of using liquid nitrogen to freeze and remove unwanted skin cells or various growths. Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment option which can be used, in some cases, as an alternative to a traditional minor surgery. You may hear cryotherapy referred by some providers to as cryoablation or cryosurgery.

What Conditions Can Cryotherapy Treat?

Cryotherapy can be used to treat a range of skin growths or conditions within dermatology. At Silver Falls Dermatology, the procedure may be used to treat:

  • Skin cancer or tumors
  • Warts
  • Moles
  • Cysts
  • Skin Tags
  • Benign growths
  • Acne
  • Scars
  • Seborrheic keratoses
  • Actinic keratoses

After Cryotherapy

Immediately after application of liquid nitrogen, the skin will become red. Blisters may also form in the treated area. Cryotherapy patients often experience mild pain such as a stinging or burning sensation, which resolves within three days or so after the procedure. Within one to three weeks, the area will form a scab, which will eventually fall away. This removes any remaining unwanted cells. Your provider will give you specific instructions to follow to encourage proper healing.
